Topic:Requirements for Eternal Life

Key Verse: “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” – Hebrews 12:14

Text: Hebrews 12:14-17 (KJV)

14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

Message:  

A memorable conversation took place between a Polish Rabbi and some visitors who were curious about the Rabbi’s simple living conditions, noticing only a table, a bench, and numerous books. They asked him about the lack of furniture, to which the Rabbi responded with a question of his own: “Where is your furniture?” When the visitor explained that he was merely passing through, the Rabbi replied, “So am I.” The exchange highlights the transient nature of our earthly existence. We are all merely passing through this world, destined for our eternal home.

The passage from Hebrews emphasizes the importance of living a life of purity and righteousness as the key requirements for entering God’s eternal kingdom. The Psalmist, in Psalm 24, asks who will ascend to heaven and answers with a call for upright living, righteousness, and truth. Those who do not backbite, do evil, or cause reproach to God and others, but instead live a life of righteousness, are assured of a place in heaven.

In the words of theologian James Packer, heaven is “an unknown region with a well-known inhabitant.” While no one on earth has experienced heaven except Jesus and those to whom God has revealed it, we can be certain that peace, purity, and the power of God are the requirements to reach heaven. We must first establish peace with God through repentance and accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, then maintain peaceful relationships with others, all while pursuing holiness. These are the prerequisites that ensure eternal life with God.
